for want of August

from the Institute recordings by Noah Boss

/

lyrics

my heart yearns for the last days of summer
those final few evenings that seem to last forever when you're in them
and yet flutter out of reach the moment you wake

it’s the bittersweet knowledge that summer is dying
and yet knowing that’s when it comes alive the most
in twilight, and long green grass, and fireflies, and through it all, coursing, a warm evening breeze

my heart is calling out for these

and autumn, soon to follow
with its brisk breeze and haunting colors
beauty through decay

but you and I both know it’s followed by the cold
the cold, how I long to be free of its jaws
away from the teeth of the winter wind

give me a warm dusky moon
the smell of the trees
the soft caress of the evening
dimming, fading

give me the last days of summer
